<image:title>Journey - In my early 20s, I was designing chips in windowless labs in Silicon Valley, and loving it</image:title>
<image:caption>Working for some of the big valley giants, I learnt a lot. I designed products that generated billions of dollars in revenue. In the process I learnt a lot about myself, which led me to quit Silicon Valley. circa 2008 - 2013</image:caption>

<image:title>Work - 360 Capture : Yellow Submarine & Friends</image:title>
<image:caption>1. Prototyping with a little help from my friends! The basis for the entire circuitry is the ability to control a GoPro from the controller through a port at the back, to which external (proprietary) devices can connect to, and control the camera from. In order to decode this protocol, I used a logic analyzer, and with a bit of help from hacker forums, voila!</image:caption>

<image:title>Work - 360 Capture : Yellow Submarine & Friends</image:title>
<image:caption>2. Controller board PCB layout : An arduino was used to control one one of the GoPros. However, due to signal delays and unpredictability of the internal camera logic, I wasn't able to control all 6 cameras synchronously. The delays would cause the final image to be ‘warped’, i.e. show a noticeable lag in different parts of the image.I borrowed the concept of a ‘clapboard’ from the film industry and integrated a piezo-buzzer (cheap, easy to use) that emits a sharp beep registering on the audio track of all the cameras</image:caption>

<image:title>Work - 360 Capture : Yellow Submarine & Friends</image:title>
<image:caption>3. Design of the control and power board : I needed to route both power and control signals to each camera. With more than 25 separate signals, and circuitry to step down and stabilize battery power, it needed its own board. Using the single camera controller as the basis, I put together a circuit schematic and its corresponding layout (in Eagle) for two layer board manufacturing. The board had to be same size as the controller board so it could be mounted on top.</image:caption>

<image:title>Work - DIVR : Virtual Reality Snorkeling - Double Immersion</image:title>
<image:caption>We are collaborating with Stanford’s Virtual Human Interaction Lab to study the cognitive and affective effects of the “double immersion” of being in water and virtual reality simultaneously. The core hypothesis is that this double immersion provides increased presence, especially when the virtual environments support the physical effects of weightlessness. For this reason all the content created for the DIVR system is crafted in environments which support this, such as flying, swimming and outer space experiences.</image:caption>

<image:caption>We theorize that the Mammalian Dive Reflex combined with enhanced proprioception due to the tactility of the liquid medium creates a calming effect on the mind, and increased connection to the body. We build on these effects with tranquil but stimulating virtual experiences to give users an in-body rather than an out-of-body experience.</image:caption>

<image:title>Work - DIVR : Virtual Reality Snorkeling - Flotation Aid & Tether</image:title>
<image:caption>It was absolutely essential to make users feel as comfortable as possible, and hit upon the idea of adding a flotation aid to help this aspect. We tried ankle and arm floats but eventually picked a flotation belt for its ease of use and ergonomics. This allows users to not have to constantly work to stay afloat, enabling relaxation. Once users put on on the VR headset, they quickly lose track of their surroundings due to the “double-immersion” that VR + water provides. To prevent them from swimming into walls of the pool and others and others around, we experimented with tethering users to the bottom of the pool.</image:caption>
</image:image>
<image:image>
<image:loc>https://images.squarespace-cdn.com/content/v1/5ef41f35c94df452321ebee5/1606192339396-D5OZPE401TXTXCVC1YZF/DIVR-Protos-swimmer-brown.png</image:loc>
<image:title>Work - DIVR : Virtual Reality Snorkeling - This added the design constraint that the pool had to be shallower than standing height , which turned out to be a great safety feature as well. We started with a rope tied to a rock, and iterated till we got to a sandbag filled with weights attached to an elastic tether. The amount if elasticity was crucial so that users that chose to swim would have some leeway before being gently pulled back. Once we were able to combine these two features into a compact unit, it started feeling right.</image:title>

<image:title>Work - DIVR : Virtual Reality Snorkeling</image:title>
<image:caption>The software platform and Android modifications created for VRSlide were a natural fit for DIVR, thereby using an Android device inside the modular headset. This allows newer models to be swapped in, as older ones become obsolete. This design allows the use of wireless chargers so that devices are never taken out of the housing, and need minimal handling, while HQ manages all software remotely over the cloud.</image:caption>

<image:title>Work - DIVR : Virtual Reality Snorkeling</image:title>
<image:caption>This was motivated by my design ethos that the headset is never treated as a mobile phone, needing interfacing, but rather a standalone VR device that has no touchscreen or 3D interface. I found this ideal for the waterpark/resort environment, where these devices are typically managed by lower level employees or lifeguards. This also removes the temptation of ‘playing around’ with the phones, and limits their functionality to only the VR experiences.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Shadow Detection : From both Daan's and my earlier experiments hacking a GoPro and used an Arduino as the controller, triggering the camera whenever a ‘dip’ in light levels was flawed. In theory image recognition could have been used, but conditions would worsen underwater, where light is more diffuse, hence shadows ill defined. Moreover, lights levels in the reefs we were studying, were prone to fluctuation due to changing tides, swell and plankton blooms.</image:caption>

<image:title>Work - Manta ID : Underwater LIDAR Camera Trap</image:title>
<image:caption>Laser Detection : Daan had come to the conclusiond thar lasers were the way to go underwater. We designed a new system and triggering algorithm, using an Arduino-friendly low resolution grayscale camera, the ArduEye. The idea was to pulse laser light, and if reflections were received, there was a creature overhead. We postulated that using multiple lasers spread over an area, would allow triggering to be more sensitive to the size of the subject.</image:caption>

<image:title>Work - Manta ID : Underwater LIDAR Camera Trap</image:title>
<image:caption>We prototyped the application and were able to fine tune the detection parameters. In the final design, a smaller arduino and smaller GoPro-like camera, the HackHD, were used to minimize footprint, for the smallest possible housing. Dry tests were successful. Our method of using 2 lasers to detect creatures atleast as wide as the inter-laser distance came in handy.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Reducing Footprint : A smaller housing means less chance of leaking and more space for batteries = longer life between retrievals. The final circuit design & physical sizing was done using Fritzing, and implemented on a perfboard, which included an LDR to detect darkness levels, below which the primary camera would not provide useful information, thus conserving battery at night.</image:caption>

<image:title>Work - Manta ID : Underwater LIDAR Camera Trap - Manta Rays are mysterious creatures, difficult to track and study. However, they bear natural spot markings which are unique to individuals and can be used to catalog specimens or monitor individuals within populations, in addition to understanding geographic range, with the help of global photo identification databases.</image:title>
